Dengue Fever in Bali: Symptoms, Prevention, and When to See a Doctor
Reviewed by dr. Putu Trahinari Satvika Rumthi, S.Ked

Bali’s tropical climate makes it a natural home for mosquitoes, and dengue fever spreads through mosquito bites all year round. Cases rise during the rainy season, but tourists and locals can catch dengue any month. Knowing the signs early helps you get treated before the illness turns serious.

What is dengue fever
Dengue is a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes. These mosquitoes bite mostly during the day, especially in the two hours after sunrise and before sunset. Once a mosquito bites an infected person, it can pass the virus to the next person it bites.
Symptoms usually start 4 to 7 days after the bite. Early signs include:
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eyes
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Skin rash
The fever often drops after 3 to 7 days. This drop can feel like relief, but it actually marks the most critical phase of the illness. Watch for these warning signs and seek medical care right away if you notice:
Severe stomach pain Repeated vomiting Bleeding gums or nose Blood in vomit or stool Rapid or difficult breathing Extreme fatigue or restlessness
These signs point to a more severe form of dengue that needs immediate treatment.
How to prevent dengue in Bali
You lower your risk by avoiding mosquito bites in the first place. Practical steps that work:
- Apply mosquito repellent with DEET or Icaridin, especially during the day
- Wear long sleeves and long pants, particularly at dawn and dusk
- Sleep under a mosquito net or use window screens
- Remove standing water around your home, since mosquitoes breed there
- Apply sunscreen first, then repellent, if you use both
None of these steps guarantee full protection, but together they cut your risk significantly.
How dengue is treated
There is no specific cure for dengue. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supporting your body while the virus runs its course. Rest and drink plenty of fluids, including water, coconut water, or oral rehydration solutions. If you cannot keep fluids down, IV fluids at a clinic help prevent dehydration.
For fever and pain, take paracetamol only. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin, since these increase bleeding risk in dengue patients. A doctor will also monitor your platelet count through blood tests, since low platelets signal a higher risk of complications.
Getting the right diagnosis matters, because dengue symptoms overlap with other illnesses like typhoid or flu. A blood test confirms the diagnosis and lets your doctor plan the right treatment and monitoring schedule.
